“Try six different meetings before you decide if Al-Anon is right for you. The important thing is to find a place to make your home.”

Electronic Meetings

Electronic meetings, like all Al‑Anon meetings, offer help and hope to anyone who is affected by alcoholism in a family member or friend. Electronic Al‑Anon meetings agree to abide by the spirit of the Twelve Traditions.

Each Al‑Anon member is responsible for keeping the meeting focused on Al‑Anon recovery and discussion of Al‑Anon related topics. Al‑Anon will always be what we—its members—make it.

Confidentiality and anonymity varies from platform to platform. It is the responsibility of the Al‑Anon member to understand how to maintain personal anonymity when participating in an online Al‑Anon meeting and to understand the privacy issues with the various service providers.

Some meetings are specific to LGBTQ+, Men, Parents, and Women. We ask that you honor their Group Conscience by only attending a meeting that you would choose to attend in person.

Use the following best-practices when you use online meeting services to ensure anonymity and a safe community for everyone:

  • Anonymity/First name only - When you sign in, type in your first name only (and last name initial if you like) to protect your anonymity.

  • Attention “phone in” participants - If you call in to a video conference, your phone number is partially displayed.

  • Ensure privacy for everyone - Be sure you are in a private space so that people who are not in Al-Anon don't see or hear the meeting. This will also maintain the anonymity of group members.

  • Mute yourself when you're not talking - whether you are in a telephone or video meeting. If you joined by phone, most phone conference systems use either *1 or *6 to mute/unmute.

  • Video - If you want to be visible to others you'll need a smart phone or a computer that has a camera. You may also choose to not allow video and just use the audio option. Note: Some Groups may request that you allow video for Group safety purposes.
